Free Therapy and Research on EMDR

Wonderful results at my live demonstration of EMDR last night! Maybe it is old news by now and you have already heard that I am offering free EMDR therapy in a group setting to reduce PTSD symptoms as part of research project. You can read more on my website under “FREE THERAPY” You can still sign up to participate by calling Rosalyn Avant. She is the nurse working on her capstone project for her administration degree and will be analyzing and writing up the results. I am the lead therapist doing the group EMDR.

The evening started with introductions and many attendees shared PTSD symptoms and ways they deal with the symptoms. Some attendees had some experience with EMDR. During the therapy with the volunteer, I explained the process and the disturbance level he experienced dropped from a 7 to 3 on the typical pain scale used in the doctor’s office. Observers reported that they noticed a change in his facial features and he reported feeling better about the target memory we worked on. The demonstration of EMDR was attended by 25 people, many from the PTSD group that meets twice monthly at the Douglas County Community Center and a number of mental health and health care providers who were interested in helping others and learning more about EMDR.

The research project will look at the effectiveness of EMDR when applied in a group setting. We have only found one other study of this approach with adults working on their own separate issues. We have volunteer nurses and therapists who will be on hand at each of the therapy sessions to assist should a participant become emotionally overwhelmed or even need medical assistance. If you are interested in helping or just to learn more – please call Rosalyn soon – we hope to start within the month and will go six weeks.

Dr. Dixon and Rosalyn Avant provided an excellent presentation of EMDR-assisted therapy. After attending this meeting, I would highly recommend participating and exploring this effective and evidence-based therapy technique for post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma symptoms. Dr. Thorp
