I was doing therapy with a mother who was daily reliving a family member’s car crash as if it were happening again. Hearing the wail of a siren was excruciating. We worked on the triggering memory with EMDR. That helped. The sirens still bothered her so she took my acronym suggestion and made it her own. To maybe help other, she is letting me share how she made SIREN into an acronym to remind herself of how she would like to think and react instead. Here it is:
